The western meadowlark ranks with the bison and cottonwood as one of the most popular icons of the Great Plains. The first of six states to adopt the meadowlark were Nebraska, Oregon, and Wyoming, which made their designations in 1927.

Wyoming’s symbols also include the other two members of the Great Plains triad, the bison and cottonwood.
