Rhode Island State Shell

Rhode Island State Shell and Coral

Rhode Island’s state shell is a clam known locally as a quahaug.

A few states have adopted prehistoric corals as official fossils, while Hawaiians stupidly designated black coral their official gemstone. In 2021, Rhode Island became the first state to adopt an official coral proper, bestowing the honor on the northern star coral.

If you didn’t know corals live in New England, join the crowd. The star coral is a hard or stony coral that lives in small colonies.
