New Mexico State Mammal

New Mexico is one of several states that call the black bear their state mammal or animal. However, New Mexico is the home of the most famous black bear, Smokey Bear.

Smokey Bear began as a cartoon character during World War II. The National Forest Service also had a mascot named Smokey.

In 1950, New Mexico’s Lincoln National Forest was struck by two forest fires. A bear cub found cowering in a tree was rescued and treated for its burns. The cub was named Smokey and spent its last days in the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

Unfortunately, the Forest Service’s Smokey Bear campaign is misguided. Wildfire is a natural thing. It’s a very important part of Nature. Preventing forest fires only allows dead wood to build up. When a fire finally starts, it can get out of control.
