New Mexico State Fish

New Mexico’s state fish is the New Mexico or Rio Grande cutthroat trout. It may have been the first New World trout seen by Europeans.

Spanish explorer Francisco de Coronado saw trout in the Pecos River near Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1541. They were probably the Rio Grande subspecies.
