New Jersey State Insect

New Jersey State InsectBlack swallowtail (left) and io moth.

New Jersey has two state insects.

The honeybee was designated the official state bug. That’s a frankly stupid title for a terribly redundant symbol. In 2018, legislation was drafted to name the common eastern bumblebee the official pollinator.

The native black swallowtail butterfly is New Jersey’s official butterfly. It also represents far off Oklahoma.

There was an attempt to make the Io moth the official state moth. It would have been the first state moth.
