Michigan Cultural Symbols

Michigan has just three official cultural symbols, including a historical society and a flag pledge. The most interesting is probably The Legend of Sleeping Bear, the official children’s book.

The book is based on a Native American legend regarding the creation of the dunes and islands that are now protected in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. In the story, the North Manitou and South Manitou islands represent bear cubs. The sand dunes are described as the “momma bear,” who is eternally devoted to her cubs.
