Maryland State Mammal

Maryland has three official domestic animals, a horse, dog, and cat. It shares its state horse, the Thoroughbred, with Kentucky. The state dog is the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

The “chessie” traces its history to two Newfoundland dogs rescued from a foundering ship in Maryland in 1807. The breed is known for its tolerance of stormy weather, cold water, and even ice. It is valued not just for its strength and endurance but for its intelligence and affectionate protective nature.

The calico cat isn’t a particular breed. Rather, the term is applied to an unusual color pattern (black, white, and orange) that occurs in many breeds. The colors orange and black complement Maryland’s flag, similar to the state flower, bird and insect.
Virtually all calico cats are female.
