Louisiana Earth Symbols

The Pelican State’s official mineral and fossil are the agate and petrified palmwood. The official cabochon gemstone isn’t an earth symbol at all; it’s the pearl of the eastern oyster.

Soil ˆ

Louisiana’s unofficial state soil is called Ruston.

Ruston siols are very deep, well drained, and moderately permeable. They formed in loamy marine or stream deposits on the uplands of Western and Southern Coastal Plains. Ruston soils are associated primarily with woodlands.
