Kentucky State Mammal

Kentucky has two official state mammals, the gray squirrel and the Thoroughbred. The latter ties in with the state’s bluegrass theme.

The Bluegrass Region is known for its rolling hills and highly fertile soil, as well as its horse farms. Kentucky is also the home of the Kentucky Derby, probably the most famous horse race in the world.

Kentuckians harnessed their image as a land of sleek racehorses to create the slogan “Kentucky Unbridled Spirit.” It is reportedly one of the most popular state slogans. But does it represent quality of life or Big Business?

Sadly, the Bluegrass Region is disappearing in the face of development. Homes and businesses are squeezing out farms.
