Connecticut: Symbols of the Arts

Connecticut has half a dozen official symbols of the arts, some of which are unique designations.

Song (second) “Beautiful Connecticut Waltz,” composed by Joseph Leggo of Newington 2013
Polka “Ballroom Polka,” written and composed by Ray Henry Mocarski 2013
Cantata Nutmeg 2003
Composer Charles Ives 1991
Troubadour (by appointment)
Folk Dance square dance Redundant Symbol 1995

Connecticut is the only state with an official state composer (Charles Ives) and troubadour. Not surprisingly, it also has a couple extra official songs and the only state cantata (“Nutmeg”). The second state song is “Beautiful Connecticut Waltz,” while “Ballroom Polka” is the official state polka.

Less unique is Connecticut’s official folk dance, the square dance.
