California State Reptile

California has two state reptiles. It shares the desert tortoise with neighboring Nevada. However, only California is represented by the leatherback sea turtle, one of the biggest reptiles in the world.

In 1865, a man who was visiting California wrote a short story titled “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” Very popular, the story launched the career of a man popularly known as Mark Twain.

Twain stumbled over the frog jumping contest in a mining town called Angels Camp. The hero of his story was a California red-legged frog, which is now the official state amphibian.
