Arizona State Mammal

Arizona State Mammal

Arizona school children voted for their state mammal, reptile, and amphibian in 1986. The candidates included the Coues white-tailed deer, desert bighorn sheep (Nevada’s state animal), and javelina or peccary. Arizona is one of the few states where these creatures live.

However, the winner was a smaller desert dweller, the ringtail, also known as a cacomistle or miner’s cat.
