Alabama State Bird

Alabama State Bird

Alabama is the only state that calls a woodpecker its state bird. No ordinary woodpecker, the “yellowhammer” is a familiar symbol of the Civil War that in turn inspired one of Alabama’s most popular nicknames.

Do Southerners still call the northern flicker a yellowhammer today?

I suspect the answer is no. However, there’s no confusion regarding the name of Alabama’s official state game bird, the eastern wild turkey.
