Vermont State Mammal

Vermont has two official mammals, both of them domestic.

It shares the Morgan horse with neighboring Massachusetts. This famous breed is named for a school teacher named Justin Morgan, who moved from Massachusetts to Vermont.

The Morgan horse isn’t as fast as a Thoroughbred nor as spirited as an Arabian horse. It’s known primarily as a sturdy draft animal.

The Randall lineback cattle breed was designated Vermont’s official heritage breed of livestock. Like Maine’s coon cat, it has adapted to its local environment.
