Fish Symbols

As national symbols, fishes can’t compete with birds and mammals. However, a few countries have adopted official fishes, and they are very popular among the 50 U.S. states as well as Canada and Australia.

Let’s take a brief tour of these fishes of state.

National Fishes ˆ

U.S. State Fishes ˆ

Fish are super popular symbols among the 50 states. Some states have an official freshwater and saltwater fish. Georgia and Maine both adopted three state fishes. Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio are the only U.S. states with no official fish.

The most popular state fish is the brook trout. The cutthroat trout is the most popular finned symbol in the West, while the largemouth bass rules the South. The striped bass is the most popular marine state fish.
