Nebraska State Bird

The western meadowlark ranks with the bison and cottonwood as one of the most popular icons of the Great Plains. The first of six states to adopt the meadowlark were Nebraska, Oregon, and Wyoming, which made their designations in 1927.

The meadowlark’s closest rival appears to be the majestic sandhill crane, which has even appeared on a number of state flag proposals. In 2022, the Sandhill Crane was named Nebraska’s official migratory bird.
