North Carolina State Mammal

North Carolina has four official state mammals. The gray squirrel and opossum serve as the official mammal and marsupial. (Marsupials are also mammals, of course.)

Wild horses have roamed North Carolina’s Outer Banks for hundreds of years. Where did they come from?

They are direct descendants of colonial Spanish mustangs brought by Spanish conquistadors beginning in the 16th century. Today, the colonial Spanish mustang is North Carolina’s official horse.
