Mississippi’s mammal symbols are a little odd. It shares its official water mammal, the bottle-nose dolphin, with Florida and South Carolina. Who could say no to such a remarkable animal?
But Mississippi legislators also adopted the white-tailed deer and red fox, calling both of them the official “land mammal.”
Wouldn’t it make more sense to create educational titles? For example, the red fox could be designated the official predator. Calling the fox and deer both the official land mammal is dumb.
