Washington State Bird

Washington State Bird
State Birds Home

The only state bird representing states on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, the eastern goldfinch was adopted by Washington, New Jersey, and Iowa. (Washington’s legislation calls it a “willow goldfinch.”)

Long before the goldfinch was adopted, Washington school children voted for the western meadowlark, which represents neighboring Oregon. More recently, there have been unsuccessful attempts to replace the goldfinch with the great blue heron.
