Montana is one of six states that call the western meadowlark their state bird, making it even more popular than the bison and cottonwood as a state symbol.

Some Montana legislators once tried to replace the meadowlark with the black-billed magpie, which remains in Montana during winter. The meadowlark stood its ground, however.
