The nēnē or Hawaiian goose is the only state bird that is native to just one state.
Long toed and reduced webbing are adaptations to living on lava flows. Unfortunately, the nēnē is not so well adapted to warding off the various predators that have been introduced to the tropical paradise it calls home.
