California State Grass

California State Grass

California’s state grass is purple needlegrass. Native Americans ate the seeds of this native bunchgrass, which was once one of the region’s dominant grass species.

Some references claim that rice (another member of the grass family) is California’s official grain. However, it appears that it was given that designation by a governor’s proclamation, but it was never made official.
