Animals rank with plants as the most popular ecosymbols representing countries, states, etc.
The most popular animal symbols are birds and mammals. However, the 50 U.S. states have adopted a wide variety of animal symbols; South Carolina even has a state spider.
Herptiles, fish, and invertebrates have made their mark on a few countries as well. Finland has two national insects, while the African nation of Cameroon takes its name from shrimp (camarões in Portuguese).
